| In addition to preschool readiness skills the Morning class will be learning Good Talking Words this year. This weekly program helps teach children to have Good Listening Bodies, use good Greetings and Good Manners Words, Turn-taking, Sharing, Helping, and other social skills. |
Afternoon Class Goals
and Activities
| The afternoon class will learn pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten skills involving letters, phonemic awareness, numberals and counting, thinking skills, and improving fine motor skills such as cutting and writing. |
* Children ages 3 through 5 years may attend. They must show evidence of significant delay for their age in one or more of these areas:1. Speech and language
2. Behavior and socialization
3. Cognitive skills (Knowledge, thinking, readiness skills)
4. Self-help skills
5. Motor skills
* Referrals come from the District's annual CHILDCHECK, a screening for preschoolers usually held in March. (Announcements are made via radio, TV, newspaper, and flyer distribution.)
* Referrals also come from parents, doctors, or public agencies.
* Following referral, arrangements may be made for evaluation of the child. Parents and professionals will decide if the Early Childhood program is appropriate.
* Referrals can be made at any time during the school year.
* Individual educational plans (IEP) are designed for each student to meet the needs in the skills areas listed above.
* Length if day depends on the child's age and needs. Younger children may attend 1/2 days from 2 to 5 days per week. Others may attend all day. If appropriate, older children may attend Kindergarten for part of a session or a full 1/2 day.
* Other special services available to preschool children as needed may include speech and language therapy, adapted physical education, and consultation with occupational and physical therapists.
* There is NO cost for either the CHILDCHECK screening of the Early Childhood program. These services are provided by Glendive Public Schools in response to Federal and State requirements regarding identification and services for children at risk.
* Children under age 6 who qualify for the program are simply considered "at risk" for possibility of more serious developmental delay later on. No other label is applied at this point.
* Children progress from the Early Childhood class to the next appropriate placement. That might be a regular class (wit assistance programs if needed), a special education class, or a combination of the two.
* A child's placement is not changed without parent participation in that decision.
* The class is located at Lincoln School. (Transportation may be arranged with the District through Special Services.)
* Bring your child to ChildCheck, held annually in March. If significant delay appears to be present, your child may be referred for more complete evaluation.
* Call The Special Service's Office
at 377-4629.
