LINCOLN SCHOOL NEWS 2011

Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn

OCTOBER IS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH - This month highlights the need for families to plan what they would do if fire should break out in their homes.  Develop a family plan and rehearse it to ensure that your children would know what to do in the event of a fire.

SCHOOL DAY- It is very important that students are on time for class at 8:05 a.m. Students are to be dropped off on the playground before classes start and picked up from the playground when classes are finished.  Your promptness and timeliness in picking up your child or children from the playground at the end of the school day is also important since we do not have playground supervision after 3:12 p.m. Students that are not picked up from school by this time are brought to the office to call for their ride.  They remain inside by the office until their ride shows up.

NOTES – If your child is planning to go with another student at the end of the school day, we need to have a written note to that effect. While one parent note is sufficient, it is best to have communication from both children’s parents so that we know that parents are involved in the arrangement. This does not apply to carpooling, daycare, or other regular arrangements.

LUNCH – While we attempt to provide a variety of main courses in our lunch menu, we realize that there will be times that your child does not like the option. When this happens, we would encourage you to work with your child in packing a cold lunch the evening before. This helps to prevent food waste and unpleasant issues related to eating. It also helps to teach responsibility and preparation as the child makes choices regarding the monthly menu.

If you are planning to eat with your child or grandchild, please call the office by 9:00 a.m. on the day you are coming so that you can be included in our lunch count. We must do this so that the kitchen staff can prepare accordingly. Adult lunches are $3.50 per day. Please stop at the office to complete a Visitor badge and wait for your child’s class.   Payment should be made in the office prior to going through the lunch line with your child.

SCHOOL VISITSAll non-school personnel must stop at the office. Visitors and guests must sign in and receive a visitor pass. Parents who have an item or a message for a teacher or student should leave it at the office.  It will be delivered at a convenient time.  We value time on task and classroom interruptions must be prevented whenever possible. When interruption is necessary, only school personnel will make this interruption.

STUDENT ABSENCES – Please notify the office at 377-2308 when your child has a planned or a necessary unplanned absent from school.  A written note should be given to the teacher upon return to school. Appointment considerations and checking in/checking out are discussed in the Parent/Student Handbook.

WINTER WEATHER SURVIVAL:  Please checkout the school’s website for good information on Winter Weather Survival; and how to put together a Winter Survival Kit.

SEASONAL FLU – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following actions for preventing the spread of germs.

CHARACTER COUNTS PILLAR FOR OCTOBER IS TRUSTWORTHINESS – Please talk with your children about the meaning of trustworthiness at home.  Trustworthiness includes four ethical principles:

Integrity:  People with integrity don’t do anything they think is wrong, nor do they lose heart if they fail.

Honesty:  Honesty means telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth as well as being sincere and forthright.  A number of behaviors can damage relationships – exaggerations, promising what you cannot deliver, distorting the truth, withholding important facts, or making false statements.

Promise-keeping (reliability):  This means keeping your work and honoring your commitments.  It also includes being dependable, doing what you are supposed to do, returning what you borrow or paying your debts.  You are reliable if you show up when you are supposed to.  Be prepared.  Having homework done and supplies ready for school are examples, too.

Loyalty:  A loyal person stand up for his or her family, friends, school, and country.  Be a good friend to others and look out for those who care about you.  Keep private information confidential.  Stick up for your friends, but don’t do anything that is wrong, even for a friend or just so others will like you.  Don’t ask your friends to do anything wrong.  Keep from spreading hurtful rumors or gossip.

MANNERS OF THE WEEK FOR OCTOBER:

            October 3 – 7 - Keep your promises.

October 10 – 21 - Admit the truth and tell the truth.

            October 24 – 28 - Follow instructions.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES – Evening conferences will be held on November 8 and 10.

Letters will be sent home with students on October 25 for parents to sign up for conferences.  Lincoln School will be having its annual Book Fair in the library during this time as well.
