NOVEMBER 2007

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES - Conference letters went home on Monday, October 22 with the students. Confirmation slips were sent home with the report cards on Wednesday, October 31. Information regarding your child's performance in the Accelerated Reader Program was also be sent home with report cards. Conferences will be held on Tuesday, November 6 and  Thursday, November 8 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Since communication between school and home is vital to your child's learning, we value this time to meet with you and discuss mutual concerns and successes. Although we attempt to schedule a time that works for most, we realize that it does not work for all. If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your child's teacher, please call the school so that a time can be arranged. If we do not hear from you in regard to conferences, please expect the school to contact you. It is essential that we see you all. . Lost and found items will be on display on a table by the office during conferences. Please check for any items your child may have lost at school. There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, November 9.

School Day - It is very important that students are on time for class at 8:10 a.m. Students are to be dropped off on the playground before classes start and picked up from the playground when classes are finished. Your promptness and timeliness in picking up your child or children from the playground at the end of the school day is also important since we do not have playground supervision after 3:15 p.m. Students that are not picked up from school by this time are brought to the office to call for their ride. They stay inside by the office until their ride shows up.

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills that your child can acquire. Even though the skills that are taught in school are necessary for learning to read, they are not sufficient in developing the attitudes and practices that make lifelong readers. Beginning this quarter, we are asking each of our students to develop the practice of reading regularly outside of school time. your help in encouraging your child to be consistent in this effort will go a long way to determine his/her success with this goal. Next week you can expect a letter explaining more completely the established goal for your child and some of the ways that we will attempt to involve you more directly. Please look for this letter and consider ways that you can support reading in your home every day.

MISSOULA CHILDREN'S THEATER PRODUCTION - during the week of November 26 students will participate in MCT'S creation of "The Little Mermaid". Tryouts will be on Monday, November 26 at 3:45 p.m. at the DCHS cafeteria. The final performance will be on Saturday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m. Admission to this performance is free. Be looking for more information that will be sent home with students later in the month.

CHARACTER COUNTS PILLAR OF THE MONTH IS CITIZENSHIP – With elections taking place it is a good time to emphasize citizenship. During the month we will feature the duties, rights, conduct and responsibilities of the citizen of a state.  Some important points to make with children are:

*Be a good citizen and a good neighbor.
*Care about and pursue the common good.
*Be a volunteer – help your school and community be better, cleaner & safer.
*Protect the environment by conserving resources, reducing pollution, and cleaning up after yourself.
*Participate in making things better by voicing your opinion, voting, serving on committees,  reporting wrongdoing, and paying taxes.
