OCTOBER
IS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH - this month highlights the
need for families to plan what they would do if fire should break out
in their homes. Develop a family plan and rehearse it to ensure that
your children would know what to do.
PUBLICATIONS - In addition to this newsletter, we would ask you
to check out the following publications:
"Home-School Connection" which contains many good
ideas for promoting education at home will be sent on the first Tuesday
of the month.
"Reading Connection" which provides suggestions on
how to promote and encourage reading will be sent on the second Tuesday
of the month.
"Firm, Fair and Consistent", published by the Parent
Institute, includes sound, helpful information in raising happy and
responsible children will be sent on the third Tuesday of the Month.
Many of you who have indicated that you will use the Internet to access
these publications so they will not be sent home with your child in
printed form. For those of you who have more than one child at Lincoln
School, a coy of each will be sent with the oldest child in the family.
If you fail to receive a copy, please send a note with your child and
we will see that you receive one.
On the
third Tuesday of the month, your child will receive a sheet with three
questions concerning each of the monthly publications. Please read each
"Connection" with your child to find the answer to each. Your child
should return the completed questions to their classroom teacher before
the final Thursday of the month. Questions will be collected and prizes
will be awarded for the first three correct answers that are drawn.
SCHOOL PICTURES - Lincoln School students will
have their fall school pictures taken on Thursday, October 11.
Lifetouch
Photography will be taking the pictures and packets for ordering will
go home with students on Tuesday, October 2. Please return the packet
whether or not you are ordering pictures as this shows the teachers
that you have see the information. The packet and payment if you are
ordering pictures must be returned on picture day, October 11. Spring
pictures may also be available, but at this time they have not been
scheduled.
WEBSITE - The school
website will be updated on a regular basis so we encourage you to
bookmark it and check in from time to time for other school
information. http://www.lincolnschool.net
SCHOOL VISITS - All non-school
personnel must stop at the office. Visitors and guests must sign in and
receive a visitor pass. Parents who have an item or a message for a
teacher or student should leave it at the office. It will be delivered
at a convenient time. We value time on task and classroom interruptions
must be prevented whenever possible. When interruption is necessary,
only school personnel will make this interruption.
STUDENT ABSENCES - Please
notify the office at 377-2308 when your child has a planned or a
necessary unplanned absence from school. A written excuse should be
given to the teacher upon return to school. Appointment considerations
and checking in/and checking out are discussed on page 3 of the
handbook.
HOMEWORK - sometimes
schoolwork must be completed outside of the school day. As a parent,
your attitudes and actions are very beneficial in making this a
productive time. Please talk with your child's teacher and read the
suggestions on page 4 of the student handbook for help in this area.
STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK UP - Please
continue to use Taylor and Power Streets when picking up and dropping
off students. If you have parked across the street, please remind your
child to use the crosswalks at the corners or make sure that an adult
accompanies them when crossing. This is going very well and we thank
you for your cooperation.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION - Lincoln
School will be participating in the General Mills Box Tops for
Education program this year. Please look for these on General Mills
products and clip them before discarding the container. After
collecting a significant number, send them to school in an envelope or
Ziploc bag with your child's name enclosed.
NOTES - If your child is
planning to go with another student at the end of the school day, we
need to have a written note to that effect. While one parent note is
sufficient, it is best to have communication from both children's
parents so that we know that parents are involved in the arrangement.
This does not apply to carpooling, daycare, or other regular
arrangements.
CHARACTER
COUNTS PILLAR FOR OCTOBER IS TRUSTWORTHINESS – Please talk with your
children about the meaning of
trustworthiness at home.
Trustworthiness includes four ethical principles:
Integrity:
People with integrity don’t do anything they think is wrong, nor
do they
lose heart if they fail.
Honesty:
Honesty means telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth
as well
as being sincere and forthright. A
number of behaviors can damage relationships – exaggerations, promising
what
you cannot deliver, distorting the truth, withholding important facts,
or
making false statements.
Promise-keeping
(reliability): This means keeping your work and honoring
your commitments. It also includes
being dependable, doing what you are supposed to do, returning what you
borrow
or paying your debts. You are reliable
if you show up when you are supposed to.
Be prepared. Having homework
done and supplies ready for school are examples, too.
Loyalty: A
loyal person stand up for his or her family, friends, school, and
country. Be a good friend to others and
look out for
those who care about you. Keep private
information confidential. Stick up for
your friends, but don’t do anything that is wrong, even for a friend or
just so
others will like you. Don’t ask your
friends to do anything wrong. Keep from
spreading hurtful rumors or gossip.
